It was Martin Luther King, Jr. who once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that,” though I’m about 90% sure he wasn’t talking about LED headlamps when he spoke those words. It was probably supposed to be something about equality for mankind and having a dream and all that other beautifully motivational stuff he preached in his prime, but let’s pretend for a minute that he actually was talking about LED headlights. Just for a minute.
Darkness is best driven out by light, and there’s no brighter light on the market right now than an LED. You’ve seen them now and again on the highway, coming at you with what appears to be tiny little suns shining from some car where yours emits a sad little spray of yellow, but most automakers haven’t been able to justify putting those lights in vehicles as a standard feature because they’ve just been too expensive.
Well, one automaker (and we’ll let you guess which one) is about to change all that.
Starting with the 2013 GS 450h, Lexus will be the first auto manufacturer in the world to be producing a car with standard all-LED headlights. Essex Lexus dealers get so many requests for the beautiful, bright-shining lights that it has to be nice to finally have the parent company offer some supply for the demand. Based on the LED headlights from the LF-Gh concept, these will actually get to consumers before the all-LED headlights Audi’s R8 has been working on—obviously a huge win for our favorite luxury auto brand.
Why are LED’s so much better than other, “regular” lights? For starters, they’re more environmentally friendly because they last so much longer and burn more efficiently than incandescent bulbs. They’re also much brighter and look a heck of lot cooler, meaning Warren Lexus GS 450h drivers are about to have the greenest, sleekest, sunniest cars driving the nighttime roadways.
LED lights were invented in the early ‘60s, so it is possible that Dr. King had heard of them when he started writing and giving speeches all over the country during the same decade. But was he talking about those lights when he said that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that”?
Let’s just say, probably.
